CNA Training Reimbursements
Students who work—or plan to work—for a qualifying nursing facility may be eligible to have certain CNA training and testing expenses paid or reimbursed.
Federal Reimbursement Requirements
Federal regulations provide important protections for nursing assistants employed by participating nursing facilities:
- If you are employed by or have received an offer of employment from a nursing facility when you begin an approved nursing assistant training and competency evaluation program, the facility may not charge you for the program, textbooks, or other required course materials.
- If you pay for an approved program yourself and become employed by or receive an offer of employment from a qualifying nursing facility within 12 months after completing the program, reimbursement requirements may apply.
Minnesota Reimbursement Requirements
Minnesota law states that a nursing assistant who completes an approved training program and competency evaluation must be reimbursed by the employing nursing home or certified boarding care home for eligible out-of-pocket tuition, textbook, and testing expenses. Reimbursement is due 90 days after employment begins or upon completion of the approved training program, whichever is later.
View Minnesota Statute § 144A.611Eligibility depends on the type of facility, your employment status, when you completed training, and whether another organization paid your training expenses.
